"Devote any amount of time exploring Windsor's music scene and you will eventually become familiar with Phil Whitfield. Perhaps not personally, but, you will discover who he is, what he does, and where he can be found. Phil is a significant member of our fair city's thriving musical community and he has the respect and admiration of everyone involved in it." ~jjr, Upfront Magazine ABOUT PHIL WHITFIELD
Picture of Phil Whitfield looking to the right
Philip Whitfield is one of Windsor/Detroit areas most versatile and sought after musicians. His proficiency as a keyboardist, guitarist, and bassist keep him busy performing and recording around the world. As a multi instrumentalist, he is not limited by the constraints of keys, bass, and guitar, he is also unbound to any limits of style or genre. It is this broad scope of abilities and capacities that has found Phil performing with such varied artists as Dick Wagner (Alice Cooper, Lou Reed), Motown Funk Brother Dennis Coffey, Motown artists such as The Contours, Martha Reeves, The Vandellas, blues legend Koko Taylor, and world renown singer Andrea Boccelli. Phil began playing guitar at a young age and by the end of high school had turned his primary attention to piano. After attending studies at The University of Windsor School of Music, where he studied classical piano performance with Dr. E. Gregory Butler and Joel Hastings, as well as classical composition with Dr. Paul MacIntyre, he discovered the joy of improvisational music. Spontaneity became his performance niche and the foundation of his compositions. His ambidexterity of playing keyboards and guitar in local R&B and Jazz groups gave way to a naturally progressive line-up of international gigs and recording dates. His compositions have found their way into various movies and commercials. Although a master in his field, Phil has a humbled character and plays indiscriminately for all social and economic demographics. Be they his performances for some of the world’s elite (including President Barack Obama) or a crowd of a baker’s dozen at your local blue collar grubbery.

WOODWORKING
“The woodworker has a special intensity, a striving for perfection, a conviction that any task must be executed with all his skill…to create the best object he is capable of creating.” — George Nakashima
To create objects that are as useful as they are beautiful is what drives Phil Whitfield in his work as a woodworker. Much like harmony in music, Phil wants to create pieces that will harmonize with you and your environment. Using mostly traditional hand tools and time honoured joinery methods (metal fasteners such as screws and nails are almost never used), he makes pieces that can become heirlooms.

Each piece is built to order. Some smaller pieces are built in batches of 5 to 10 and can be purchased when they are available. To place an order or discuss what you may want built feel free to fill out the Contact form below.
